Giants Pitcher Yusmeiro Petit Breaks Major League Baseball Record For Consecutive Batters Retired

SAN FRANCISCO (CBS SF) -- San Francisco Giants starting pitcher Yusmeiro Petit has broken the Major League Baseball single-season record for consecutive batters retired.

Petit retired the Colorado Rockies' Charlie Culberson with a strikeout in the top of the third inning at AT&T Park to set the new record at 46 batters in a row, breaking the previous mark held by Chicago White Sox pitcher Mark Buehrle in 2009.

The record was acknowledged by a standing ovation by fans. The streak promptly ended as the next two Rockies batters each got a hit against Petit.

Last season, the 29-year-old Petit fell one out shy of a perfect game against Arizona.  The Venezuelan pitcher moved this week into the Giants' starting rotation in place of the struggling Tim Lincecum.
