Four Juveniles Arrested After Stolen Vehicle Pursuit; Exchange Of Gunfire With Fremont Police

FREMONT (CBS SF/BCN) -- Four juvenile suspects were in custody early Wednesday following a stolen vehicle pursuit and foot chase that included an exchange of gunfire with Fremont police.

The incident began around 4:45 p.m. when an officer who spotted the stolen vehicle near Cushing Parkway and Auto Mall Parkway.

The officer waited for other units to arrive before attempting an enforcement stop, but the driver fled northbound on Cushing Parkway and turned west on Stevenson Boulevard.

The vehicle stopped when it came to the dead-end of Stevenson Boulevard and several suspects fled on foot, with one firing "several rounds" at pursuing officers, who returned fire at the shooter.

Fortunately, no officers were injured during the exchange of gunfire.

A perimeter was established around the area by a SWAT unit and two juvenile suspects were initially taken into custody. Two other suspects were found following an intensive search.

Police said a K9 unit was used to apprehend one suspect who refusing to comply with directions from officers. The suspect was then hospitalized.

A firearm was recovered within the perimeter, police said.

The scene is near the border with Newark and the Newark, Union City, Milpitas and East Bay Regional Park District police also assisted, along with the California Highway Patrol.
