Fremont Police Dog Niko Found Hiding In San Jose Creek Bed

SAN JOSE (CBS SF) -- Niko, a Fremont police dog that escaped from its yard sometime Friday night, was found hiding in a San Jose creek bed Sunday morning, according to police.

The Fremont Police Department announced Niko's safe return via Twitter at 11:20 a.m. The dog was located by the San Jose Police Department in the vicinity of Branham Lane and the Almaden Expressway, police said.

Niko escaped from a secured yard in San Jose's Willow Glen area sometime after 10 p.m. Friday.

At just 16 months old, he's said to be one of Fremont's newest K9s -- having been with the department for just a few weeks, according to police.

The dog "is going to be checked out, but appears to be in good health," police said.
