Record Hops Prices Mean More Expensive Beer For Drinkers
SAN FRANCISCO (CBS SF) -- A main ingredient in beer-making has reached record prices, and that means the price of your favorite brew will likely head higher.
Increased demand for craft beer, combined with a worldwide shortage has pushed the crop's price up to $14 per pount, leaving a bitter taste with many brewers.
"It'll go up maybe $80, or $100 per batch, and that translates into a more expensive keg. And, if the kegs are more expensive, it's harder to compete," Mike Schnabeck, of Fort Point Beer in San Francisco said.
The number of craft breweries is up 15-percent since last year.
Also adding to demand, more people are brewing their own beer at home.
