$110,000 Race Car Stolen In Front Of San Ramon Home

SAN RAMON (KPIX 5) – An East Bay man said some crooks swiped his prized race car worth more than $100,000 from the front of his house. The owner of the car thinks he was targeted.

"It kills you. It's like having your child kidnapped. You don't know where to look," Mike Chadwick, the car's owner, told KPIX 5.

Chadwick nicknamed the car "Red." He spent 12 years lovingly restoring it.

"One of a kind, it's a one of a kind Mustang, '67," Chadwick described.

The 1967 mustang has a 634 cubic inch engine. It's sleek, fast and pricey, worth more than $110,000.

Chadwick said he took Red for a spin at the Sonoma Raceway on Labor Day. But the place where he stored the Mustang was closed, so he parked Red in the trailer attached to his pickup truck and left it in front of his San Ramon home.

The next day, it was gone.

"At a quarter past 2:00 in the afternoon, they stopped, broke into it and drove off," Chadwick recalled.

A neighbor snapped a picture of someone driving Chadwick's pickup off with the trailer attached and his beloved mustang inside. That neighbor thinks there were three thieves, driving a silver sedan.

Mike believes the thieves targeted him.

"They had to have gone to the race, saw my car perform. It was a fast car and they probably followed me home and came back the next day and stole it," Chadwick said.

A day and a half later, Chadwick said he's losing hope he'll ever see his Mustang again. "As far as I'm concerned, the car is gone," he said.

San Ramon police are investigating. Mike's pickup truck is a tan Ford, the trailer it was towing is white, 24 feet long and says Stroke of Luck Racing on its side.
