Food Prices Dipping Nationwide, But Hardly Noticeable For Bay Area Shoppers

SAN FRANCISCO (KCBS) -- Maybe it's because there are so many farmers markets and places to shop that we don't see the prices going down, but economists say that food prices nationwide are dipping.

Milk is down 11-percent from a year ago July, with eggs down 40-percent. An excess of dairy products, meat and grains, coupled with lower energy costs for transit and refrigeration are responsible for the dip.

But, here in the Bay Area shoppers say it's hard to notice.

"I haven't noticed too much of a change myself," one shopper told KCBS.

"You've got to hit the sales. If you don't hit the sales, then you're paying full price, and it's not cheap," another shopper said.

Farmers are getting less for milk, meat and cheese, and grocery stores are seeing their margins fall even though stuff is flying off the shelves.
