Newborn Foal With Broken Pelvis Found In Fremont, Needs Surgery

FREMONT (CBS SF) -- A newborn baby horse found Sunday with a broken pelvis needs an expensive surgery, according to the Fremont Police Department, and a Burlingame resident has set up a crowd-funding effort to cover the cost of that care.

Valentine, a 6-day old colt, was rescued from Morrison Canyon by firefighters and animal service personnel, police said.

Valentine has been diagnosed with a broken pelvis and is being seen by veterinarians from the University of California at Davis.

Lisa Dellapietra, of Burlingame, has set up a fundraising effort to cover the cost of Valentine's care at https://www.gofundme.com/qtxyxgja.

"I just took the initiative because time is of the essence for this little guy," Dellapietra said via e-mail.

The funds raised will go to the Tri-City Animal Shelter to cover Valentine's surgery, according to Dellapietra.

As of 10:15 p.m. Monday the fundraiser had raised more than $630 of the stated $10,000 goal.

The shelter is also accepting donations to cover the cost of Valentine's care directly, according to police.
