Woman Fleeing San Jose Police In Stolen Car Crashes Into Light Pole, Dies

SAN JOSE (CBS SF) -- A woman died when she fled from police and crashed a stolen vehicle into a light pole Saturday night in San Jose, police said.

Patrol officers tried to stop the woman at 8:37 p.m. as she was in the vehicle at Fruitdale Avenue and Sherman Oaks Drive but she sped away.

Officers did not pursue her.

About a minute later, she crashed into a light pole at Fruitdale Avenue and St. Elizabeth Drive and died, according to police.

The woman's name will not be released until the coroner has confirmed her identity and her family members have been notified.

The crash is San Jose's 43rd fatal crash or collision this year and the woman is the 45th person to die in a traffic crash or collision in San Jose in 2016.
