Flag-Flying Marin Residents Attacked By Anonymous Letter Writer For 'Confused' Patriotism

SAN RAFAEL (CBS SF) – Several San Rafael homeowners say they were caught off-guard when they opened letters attacking them for displaying the American flag outside their homes.

The Marin Independent Journal reports that a number of people received poorly-written photocopied letters addressed to "resident" that assumed the homeowners were Conservative and did not support the "black president." The letters claim that flying the flag makes people no more patriotic than anyone else, just 'confused,' and that the displays appear to be a "moronic statement" which is "not cute."

Neighbors began sharing reaction to the letter online via Nextdoor.

"I take great umbrage at somebody being offended by the American flag," San Rafael resident Dean Morris told the paper. "I'm a veteran and I have a lot of friends who didn't make it back from Vietnam."

The letters were postmarked from San Francisco. In response, some people in the area have added to their patriotic front yard displays.

San Rafael police say the letter is not threatening enough to warrant further investigation.
