Firefighters Clean Up Diesel Spill In Marina Near Alameda

ALAMEDA (CBS SF) -- Firefighters cleaned up a diesel fuel spill at the Ballena Isle Marina Wednesday but were unable to determine the source of the spill, a fire captain said.

The spill was reported at about 9:30 a.m. at the marina at 1150 Ballena Blvd., fire Capt. Jim Colburn said.

Firefighters determined that the fuel had not spread outside of Ballena Bay and used the Alameda fire boat to extend an absorbent Hazmat boom to keep it in the Bay, Colburn said.

Alameda firefighters, the U.S. Coast Guard and the California Department of Fish and Game investigated the spill and found no impact to wildlife, Colburn said.

After using more absorbent booms to clean up the rest of the fuel, the marina was reopened this afternoon at the advice of the Coast Guard, Colburn said.

Oakland firefighters also responded with special equipment to assist, Colburn said. Sixteen Alameda firefighters responded to the spill.
