Firefighter Injured In Brush Fire Near Martinez

MARTINEZ (CBS SF) -- A five-acre brush fire injured a firefighter and prompted a major response near Martinez Sunday afternoon, according to the Contra Costa Fire District.

Fire Marshal Robert Marshall said the fire began at roughly 2:30 p.m. Sunday in the 200 block of Rancho de Maria, around steep terrain in unincorporated Contra Costa County southwest of Martinez.

Ten fire engines, two helicopters and three airplanes were called in to fight the flame, Marshall said. It took about an hour to control the blaze, he added.

One of the responding firefighters was struck by a falling rock and suffered minor injuries, Marshall said. The firefighter was taken to a hospital in Walnut Creek.

Cal Fire is still investigating the cause of the blaze.
