Fire On Track In San Francisco Causes Major BART Delays
SAN FRANCISCO (CBS SF) -- An fire on the tracks caused by an equipment problem halted BART service between San Francisco and the Peninsula early Friday, causing major systemwide delays.
The issue was first reported at 4:45 a.m. due to an equipment problem on the track south of 24th Street Station in San Francisco. A bad insulator, one of the pieces of equipment that powers the third rail, failed and caused a small fire.
The San Francisco Fire Department responded and cleared the debris at the site of the fire.
All trains stopped in both directions as technicians worked on the problem. East Bay trains were being stopped at 24th Street. For a time, there was no service from Peninsula stations into San Francisco.
While service was restored at around 6:45 a.m., there were still major delays.
