Fire In Oakland's Chinatown Overnight Displaces 17 Residents

OAKLAND (CBS SF) -- Fire investigators are looking into what caused a three-alarm fire that displaced over a dozen people this morning in Oakland.

Around 2:30 a.m., firefighters responded to a building in the 800 block of International Boulevard and found heavy smoke and fire coming from the second floor, according to fire officials.

The fire appeared to have broken out on the second floor of the building, which has commercial space on the first floor and apartments on the second floor, fire officials said.

Businesses on the first floor, which sustained fire damage, include a beauty salon, a jewelry store, a trading post and a clothing store, Battalion Chief James Bowron said.

Firefighters entered a second floor apartment to rescue to two guinea pigs, Bowron said.

The blaze also spread to a second structure.

The fire was put under control about an hour after firefighters arrived on the scene, according to fire officials.

There were no reported injuries to residents or firefighters.

Approximately 17 residents were displaced from six apartments due to the blaze, and the American Red Cross has responded to aid the victims, fire officials said.
