Fire Breaks Out At Stanford Linear Accelerator

MENLO PARK (CBS SF) -- Menlo Park fire officials are responding to a two-alarm fire at the Stanford Linear Accelerator Wednesday evening.

The fire was reported just before 10 p.m. at 2575 Sand Hill Road, according to Fire Chief Harold Schapelhouman.

Callers reported heavy black smoke coming from the accelerator area directly under Interstate Highway 280. The smoke was affecting traffic on the highway but has since diminished, Schapelhouman said.

Fire officials are working with site staff to determine the source of the smoke and make sure the accelerator is de-energized and shut down as needed to allow safe access. In addition, they are working to close smoke control doors to isolate the affected area, Schapelhouman said.

Schapelhouman said the second alarm was called as a precaution.
