1 Killed, Another Arrested Following Fiery Freeway Crash in Walnut Creek
WALNUT CREEK (CBS SF) -- The connector from eastbound Highway 24 to northbound Interstate 680 in Walnut Creek reopened after a fatal multiple-vehicle traffic collision forced its closure early Sunday morning, according to the California Highway Patrol.
The CHP said the collision occurred around 1:21 a.m. when a 2003 Nissan sedan, traveling east on Highway 24, crashed, blocking the eastbound lanes. It was soon struck by a Chevy Volt, driven by Dennis Toshimi Tajiri, a 68-year-old resident of Concord.
The other driver, as yet unidentified, was unable to escape and died when the Nissan Z burst into flames.
Tajiri suffered minor injuries and was taken to John Muir Hospital in Walnut Creek.
While he was being treated, officers placed Tajiri under arrest and, upon his release from the hospital, he was booked into the Martinez Detention Facility for felony DUI and gross vehicular manslaughter.
The incident is being investigated.
