Fewer Salmon Than Usual Swimming Off Northern California Coast; Drought Likely To Blame
BODEGA BAY (KCBS) -- State fish managers say there are fewer salmon than usual swimming in the ocean off Northern California, and that could impact the fishing season this summer.
Scientists with the state Department of Fish and Wildlife say that is because the fish were spawned and reared during the drought when river conditions were bad. Low fish stocks could mean a shorter than normal fishing season or lower bag limits.
The state says El Nino has also made it harder for ocean-going salmon to find their normal food.
