Family Of 4 Displaced In San Jose Apartment Fire Christmas Morning

SAN JOSE (CBS SF) -- Four members of a family in San Jose were displaced Thursday morning as the result of a structure fire, according to San Jose fire Capt. Mike Van Elgort.

The fire in the 5300 block of Palm Grove Court in the southern part of the city was reported at 8:13 a.m., and was under control by 9:10 a.m., Van Elgort said.

The fire was mostly contained to the unit of origin, with minor damage to the apartments on either side of it. However, Van Elgort said there was heavy fire loss in the damaged apartment.

One person who lives in the six-unit building suffered minor injuries as a result of the fire, and was not transported to a hospital for treatment.

Investigation into the cause of the fire is ongoing, but Van Elgort said investigators' initial impression is that the fire was accidental, and may have been caused by candles that went unattended.

The Red Cross is assisting the displaced family.

Additionally, Van Elgort noted the crew that fought Thursday morning's fire, who works on truck 35's C shift, is the same crew who held a funeral two weeks ago for their former captain, Darryl Weeden.
