Once Expecting Twins, Bay Area Couple Gets Happy Surprise With Birth Of Triplets

OAKLAND (CBS SF) -- Expectant father Miguel Cendejas and mother Antony Guzman were all set to welcome identical twins into the world on Wednesday.

Nature had a surprise for them -- and their doctor.

"First they told us they were twins. Then the doctor had to call somebody else -- another doctor -- to say, 'do you see what I'm seeing?' ... And they were triplets," new dad Cendejas told KPIX, referencing the ultrasound appointment that revealed the third child.

The identical triplets -- all girls -- were born late Wednesday evening at Oakland's Kaiser hospital. Their names are Sammie, Stella and Scarlett -- though the couple admits they're having trouble telling them apart.

Estimates on the odds of giving birth to identical triplets range between 1 in 60,000 to 1 in 200 million.
