Embezzlement Probe At BART Union Leads To Resignation
OAKLAND (KPIX 5) -- An embezzlement scandal at one of BART's unions has now led to a resignation.
Tacked up in a BART break room on Friday morning, was a note from the Amalgamated Transit Union Local 1555 with the subject line: substantial financial issues.
The document goes on to read that multiple financial transactions were made from a union account -- and that on November 9th -- a board meeting was called and the secretary treasurer resigned.
Michael Bernick -- a former BART board member -- says this is the first such case of embezzlement he can remember at a BART union.
Bernick said, "The unions at BART in particular, but the unions all over Northern California are really very clean. You don't see anything like this."
This isn't money that comes from your fare -- but the paychecks of the train operators and station agents.
This is a union matter which is separate from BART - these funds are union funds that are paid for out of union dues.
