Emaciated Baby Fur Seal Crosses Highway, Winds Up In Bushes In Hayward

HAYWARD (CBS/AP) -- An emaciated baby northern fur seal is recovering after it was found in some bushes at a Bay Area business park, far, far away from the shore.

Hayward police said on their Facebook page the dehydrated and malnourished seal was found after someone called about the pup around 6 a.m. Wednesday.

Police were doubtful that a seal -- somehow -- got out of the water, crossed busy Interstate 880 and found its way to the bushes.

At first police thought the caller was mistaken, and the furry creature was really just a "possum or a weird cat."

"Well lo and behold it was a seal!" said the post.

Police called the Marine Mammal Center in Sausalito. A spokesperson said their team picked up the animal which was dehydrated and malnourished. They plan to rehabilitate the seal and send it back into the wild as soon as possible.
