EBMUD Expects To Fine 5,000 Homeowners For Using Too Much Water

OAKLAND (CBS SF) -- The East Bay Municipal Utilities District expects to fine up to 5,000 homeowners for using too much water as it plans to enact a new ordinance during California's historic drought.

"We have to ask our customers to continue to save water no matter what," EBMUD Spokesperson Andrea Pook said.

Water users who go over a 1,000 gallon daily limit will receive fines of $2 per unit.

"The penalties are meant to bring home the message that California is in a drought," Pook said.
