East Oakland Students Stage Walkout To Protest Police Shooting
OAKLAND (CBS SF) – Dozens of high school students in East Oakland walked out of class Tuesday to protest the fatal shooting of a man armed with a pellet gun on Sunday, a school district spokesman said.
Roughly 70 students at Castlemont High School at 8601 MacArthur Blvd. left class at about 1 p.m. and marched around the corner to 90th and Bancroft avenues, where four police officers shot and killed the man as he approached them on Sunday evening, Oakland Unified School District spokesman Troy Flint said.
They protested there for about 30 minutes and returned to class without incident, Flint said.
Police have not identified the 39-year-old man shot and killed there, but said he approached and pointed an Airsoft pellet gun at officers who were working on impounding motorcycles involved in sideshows over the weekend.
The officers had cornered the motorcyclists there after they roamed city streets, taking up entire blocks along with cars and four-wheelers, police said.
The man shot and killed is not believed to have been affiliated with the sideshows.
As many as 700 cars participated in sideshows throughout East Oakland Saturday night and early Sunday morning, keeping Oakland police and California Highway Patrol officers scrambling.
The sideshows Sunday were smaller, but police still had to pull staff from the Oakland Raiders game to deal with them.
