East Bay Regions Get Low Rating In Providing High-Speed Internet

CONTRA COSTA COUNTY (KCBS)— When it comes to a high-speed internet connection in the East Bay, more work needs to be done according to an assessment by the East Bay Broadband Consortium.

The groups said the region is barely meeting minimum standards when it comes to broadband connectivity and that it's having a major impact on homes and businesses.

Linda Best, who represents the East Bay Broadband Consortium, said she told county supervisors in Martinez that the region that covers Contra Costa, Alameda and Solano counties is barely getting a passing mark when it comes to broadband connectivity and speed.

"Having access to Internet is absolutely crucial and we have to be sure that all of our families have that access. It attracts new business and creates new jobs. It provides services to residents," she said.

The city of Concord, however, received high praise for its broadband infrastructure. Best said some places are doing better than others.

County supervisor Candace Anderson noted how the city of San Leandro has taken the lead.

"All of their civic buildings now have this tremendous ability to connect as well as they've been using this of course as an economic development tool and they have been able to bring in significant businesses,"

Anderson also said Bishop Ranch in San Ramon has achieved similar success.
