East Bay CHP Chase Ends With Head-On Crash In Oakland

OAKLAND (KCBS) -- The California Highway Patrol is looking for two people who got into a head-on collision with a patrol car during a chase in Oakland, injuring the officer.

It happened just after 1 a.m. when CHP officers were attempting to stop a green Honda on the Fruitvale onramp to westbound Interstate 580.

Officials said the Honda fled and the officers began a chase. The Honda exited at Park Street and took multiple turns on city streets before attempting to get back into I-580 westbound by going the wrong way using the Park Street offramp.

Police ended the pursuit because of the danger to the public, since the suspect was trying to drive onto I-580 in the wrong direction.

But another officer was taking the Park Street offramp when the suspect vehicle struck his patrol car head on.

The two people in the Honda fled on foot following the collision.

The officer had minor injuries, but did not need to be hospitalized.

Police were not able to find the two suspects. No description was immediately available.
