Multiple Earthquakes Rattle Sierra Nevada Near Truckee Thursday Night

TRUCKEE (CBS/AP) -- A series of earthquakes -- the largest with a preliminary magnitude of 4.7 -- struck the Sierra Nevada north of Lake Tahoe Thursday night but there were no immediate reports of damage or injuries.

The U.S. Geological Survey said the quakes hit between 9:26 and 9:37 p.m.

The first quake struck at 9:26 p.m. with a magnitude 3.2, centered 11 miles northwest of Truckee, in Nevada County.

Sierra Nevada Earthquake

A second, more powerful quake followed at 9:35 p.m., measuring 4.7 and also striking 11 miles northwest of Truckee.

The third tremor hit at 9:37 p.m. It was a magnitude 3.1 and was centered eight miles south southeast of Sierraville, in Sierra County.
