Earlier Closing Times For San Francisco District Post Offices

SAN FRANCISCO (KCBS)— The U.S Postal Service is in the process of implementing earlier closing times for dozens of post offices in its San Francisco District, but what many may not know, is that district stretches from Santa Rosa down to Mountain View.

U.S. Postal Service San Francisco district spokeswoman Debra Brady said there are 30 locations shifting to the earlier closing time of 5 p.m., 19 of which are in San Francisco.

Brady said the adjustments are being made to increase efficiency in operations.

"The earlier we get the mail in; it can be processed faster and can be on its way to its next destination," she said.

The postal service has been plagued with budget troubles and reported a five-billion dollar loss last year.

Brady said there are still locations open later like the SFO office, which closes at midnight, and the San Francisco Evans Avenue site which closes at 8:30 p.m.

"We do have some other ones that are open until 5:30 and 6 p.m. That would be Pine, Golden Gate, Clayton and Geary.

According to Brady, most of the more than 200 USPS retail units in the San Francisco district close at 5 o' clock.
