2 Arrested In Separate Sonoma County DUI Incidents

SANTA ROSA (CBS SF) -- Two people suspected of driving under the influence were arrested in separate incidents in Sonoma County last weekend, a California Highway Patrol officer said Monday.

A patrol officer observed a Volkswagen Passat tailgating another car at about 70 mph on southbound U.S. Highway 101 north of Mendocino Avenue around 8:50 p.m. Friday, CHP Officer Jonathan Sloat said.

The officer pulled over the driver of the Passat, later identified as Martha Curoso, 60, and evaluated her for DUI because she displayed signs of intoxication, Sloat said.

Curoso, a Santa Rosa resident, was found to have a suspended license stemming from a DUI conviction last year, he said.

She was required to have an ignition interlock device installed in any vehicle she drives, but the officer did not find one on the Passat, according to Sloat.

Curoso was arrested and booked into jail on suspicion of DUI, driving with a suspended license, violation of probation and driving without an interlock device, Sloat said.

At about 10:50 p.m. Saturday, an officer stopped a Nissan Xterra without a rear license plate at Rohnert Park Expressway and Commerce Boulevard in Rohnert Park, Sloat said.

The officer noted that the driver, later identified as Cotati resident Shane Barling, showed signs of intoxication, according to Sloat.

Barling, 30, was driving the vehicle while his two children, ages 6 and 3, and their mother were in the car, Sloat said.

He failed sobriety tests and was booked into jail on suspicion of DUI and child endangerment.
