Amtrak Train Slams Into SUV, Killing Driver In Oakland

OAKLAND (CBS SF) — An investigation is underway in Oakland after a man was killed in a collision between an Amtrak train and a vehicle in Oakland on Monday night.

Officers responded to a report of the crash at San Leandro Street and High Street shortly after 10 p.m., according to police.

The Coast Starlight No. 14 train, that left from Los Angeles, was on its way to Seattle when it struck an SUV that was on the tracks at 50th Street and continued until it was able to come to a stop, Amtrak spokesman Marc Magliari said.

Passengers and crew members on the train were not injured, he said.

Oakland Fire Department Acting Battalion Chief Joe Torres told KCBS that the victim was an adult male but other information was available.

The track was reopened after three hours for the investigation and trains were running through Oakland this morning.
