San Francisco Dismembered Body In Suitcase Identified As 58-Year-Old Vallejo Resident

SAN FRANCISCO (CBS SF) -- The dismembered body found in a suitcase in San Francisco has been identified as Omar Shahwan of Vallejo, according to the San Francisco Office of the Chief Medical Examiner.

The 58-year-old's body was found on 11th Street, north of Mission Street late last month. Additional remains were found in a trash can half a block away from the original scene.

Shahwan was reported missing when the suitcase was discovered in the South of Market neighborhood. He was reportedly a friend and former roommate of Mark Andrus, the lead suspect in the case who was found dead from drug-related reasons Saturday just days after being released from police custody.

The state's Bureau of Forensic Services DNA lab helped with identifying the remains.

While San Francisco's Police Chief Greg Suhr welcomed the news of the body's positive I.D., he pointed out even though the main suspect has died, the case is still active and unanswered questions remain.

Anyone with information about the case is asked to call San Francisco police at (415) 575-4444.
