Despite Student Protests, UC Board Of Regents Approves Raising Fees By As Much As 28 Percent Over 5 Years
SAN FRANCISCO (KCBS) – The University of California Board of Regents has approved a plan that could raise student fees by as much as 28 percent over the next five years.
The vote was hardly able to be heard, following emotional appeals from UC students and staff, many of whom were chanting during the course of Thursday morning's meeting.
The plan was proposed by UC President Janet Napolitano, despite opposition from many state leaders, including Governor Jerry Brown, who voted against the hikes. For his part, Governor Brown said the system needs to come up with a more frugal way of doing business.
Costs had been frozen in the UC system for the last three years.
University of California officials said the hikes could be reduced or eliminated if the state devotes more money to the 10-campus system.
