Deputy Killed In Rural Northern California Shooting

ALTURAS (CBS SF) – A Modoc County sheriff's deputy was killed Wednesday morning in a shooting on a rural county road, authorities said.

The CHP office in San Andreas confirmed the fatal shooting.

The deputy was identified Wednesday night as Jack Hopkins, 31. He joined the department last year.

Modoc County authorities said the deputy was involved in an '"active shooter" incident at 10:30 a.m. at County Road 115 and 170 about five miles outside of Alturas.

County government offices in Alturas were placed under lockdown after reports of the shooting.

The suspect involved in the shooting was reportedly in custody.

Authorities said the sheriff's department was one of several agencies involved including the Alturas Police Department, California Highway Patrol, Cal Fire, US Forest Service and the Department of Fish and Game.

No other details were immediately available.
