Sheriff's Deputies Placed On Leave During Investigation Of Inmate Found Dead In Santa Clara County Jail

SAN JOSE (CBS SF) -- An inmate at Santa Clara County Jail was found dead early Thursday, a sheriff's office spokesman said Friday.

The inmate was found unresponsive around 12:30 a.m. by deputies conducting a routine welfare check, according to Sgt. James Jensen. Welfare checks are conducted either every hour or every half hour, depending on the area of the jail.

They administered first aid, and called for firefighters and paramedics, who pronounced the inmate dead at the scene, Jensen said.

Three deputies have been placed on administrative leave while an investigation into the death is conducted, Jensen said.

The inmates identity and the circumstances surrounding the death have not yet been released.
