Rollover Crash In Monterey County Ravine Kills 1, Injures 4

MONTEREY (CBS SF) -- A car crash on federal land in Monterey County took the life of at least one person and injured four others after a vehicle rolled roughly 600 feet down a ravine near the unincorporated Lockwood area early Saturday morning.

The rollover was reported at roughly 1:50 a.m. Saturday on Lockwood San Lucas Road, near Quail Estates on Bureau of Land Management land. The crash is believed to have occurred at roughly 12:45 a.m., according to Cal Fire.

A California Highway Patrol helicopter found the vehicle roughly seven miles north of Williams Hill, where it had rolled into a deep ravine.

Responders found four victims in need of medical assistance and one person who died on the scene, according to Cal Fire.

The victims were extracted with a rope rescue operation performed by the Monterey County Urban Search and Rescue Team, at which time a 4-wheel drive ambulance transported them to a helicopter landing zone. The victims were then transported by air to nearby hospitals, according to Cal Fire.

Saturday morning's rescue operation involved the South Monterey County Fire Protection District, the Monterey County Sheriff's Office, Cal Fire, CHP and the Fort Hunter Liggett Fire Department.
