Dalai Lama Praises California Diversity In Visit To State Capitol

SACRAMENTO (AP) — The Dalai Lama is praising California's diversity and says the state "can make a significant contribution" to the world.

The Tibetan spiritual leader spoke to a joint session of the state Legislature on Monday.

He says the many races and cultures in California provide "positive potential to create genuine harmony of the different races, different beliefs."

The Dalai Lama says proper education can create a more compassionate society.

The Dalai Lama is in the midst of a U.S. tour that included a White House visit last week with President Barack Obama. On Saturday he delivered a sermon at a new Vietnamese temple in Southern California.

He ate lunch before his address with Gov. Jerry Brown, Assembly Speaker Anthony Rendon and Senate President Pro Tem Kevin de Leon.
