Daily Madden: Working To Make The NFL Safer

SAN FRANCISCO (KCBS) - Every week, John Madden reviews NFL game film looking for ways to make the game safer.

"You have to admit it's a tough game, it's a violent game and it's a hard play game, and injuries are going to happen," Madden told the KCBS Radio morning crew.

But as a member of the NFL safety committee, John reviews every injury every week.

"We get the film of every game early in the week and then we get all the injuries early in the week," Madden said. "And what I do is tag them. You know, is there anything where you get an injury or a serious injury or a concussion that could be changed by a rule."

Madden said some injury patterns are obvious to viewers, others not so much.

"There are a lot of offensive linemen, and they're getting it when they go to the ground," Madden said. "They're going to get stepped on and kicked and kneed and all that."

Madden said there's an effort by linemen to stay on their feet as much as possible.

"Most offensive lines are playing higher and higher and higher because they don't want to go to the ground, because that's where they're getting their injuries." (6:35)
