Daily Madden: Spurs' Victory A Credit To Team Play And Patience

(KCBS) - The San Antonio Spurs won their fifth NBA Championship Sunday by beating the Miami Heat four games to one. Five Spurs players scored in double figures and the team had 25 assists in Game Five.

"That was just team basketball," John Madden told the KCBS Radio morning crew. "It may be old fashioned, but maybe that's what we have to get back to. Maybe we could use more of that in football and baseball and soccer, in all sports."

Madden said Spurs coach Gregg Popovich showed patience in preparing his players for the championship run throughout the season.

"He takes care of them during the year. Remember, he didn't take some of his players on a trip. He didn't play them in certain games. He knows when he's going to need them. He knows how he has to get there, and he knows what he has to do along the way... They're doing everything to get ready for that championship week, I mean to get ready for these games that they just won, they do it all year. I don't know anyone else that's ever done that in any sport." (6:35)
