Daily Madden: Should The 49ers Play Ray McDonald After Domestic Violence Arrest?

SAN FRANCISCO (CBS SF) -- The San Francisco 49ers haven't yet said whether defensive lineman Ray McDonald will play in the season opener against Dallas Sunday.

McDonald was arrested for domestic violence over the weekend, but hasn't yet been charged in the case. "I don't know enough about the situation to say what someone like Jim Harbaugh should do," John Madden told the KCBS Radio morning crew.

But Madden said in general a coach shouldn't be faulted for playing a player who has been cleared to play by team management and the league. "(A coach's) responsibility is to do the best you can to win and play the best players you have available... If the organization and/or the league make him available -- if they say we are not going to do anything, you can play him -- as a coach, you kind of play him," he said.

Madden said this case and others like it overshadow all the good done by NFL players. "Most players are good. They're good people, they're good guys, they're good players," Madden said. "They don't get talked about."
