Daily Madden: If They Build It In L.A., They Will Come

SAN FRANCISCO (KCBS) -- The L.A. Times reports the NFL is considering financing a new stadium in Los Angeles. "I could see that," John Madden told the KCBS Radio morning crew. "Eventually there would be a team or two in there, but (the teams) wouldn't have to use capital to get the stadium built. They would pay rent then to the league."

Presently there is no NFL team in the second largest TV market in the country. "Getting a team to L.A. is not the problem. Getting an owner that wants to move to L.A. is not a problem. But getting a stadium built in L.A. is a problem. If the league can't do it other ways that they've tried for years, maybe they'll just try this and build it themselves."

The Raiders might be a potential tenant. "The three teams that are mentioned are the teams that need a stadium and have either no lease or a short team lease," Madden said. "And those three teams are San Diego, St. Louis and Oakland. So they say that it would be two of those teams. But the minute you think it's that simple, it's not, and there's some wild card somewhere else."
