Daily Madden: David Wilson's Sad Short NFL Career
SAN FRANCISCO (KCBS) - Promising New York Giants running back David Wilson's career has come to an end just two years after it started. The 2012 first round pick has suffered recurring neck problems, and was advised to leave the game.
"You start with the head, neck and spine area, and then you have surgery, and then right off the bat you get another incident. It's probably time to do that," John Madden told the KCBS Radio morning crew.
Madden said Wilson's position no doubt was a factor in the decision.
"With the running back, there's no escaping from it. It's not like another position. Peyton Manning (had neck surgery) and he's done it successfully -- and I'm not comparing it. I'm not sure how close they were to having the same type of thing. It's difficult as heck with a quarterback also, but it's a little easier to control than a running back, (who has) no control over what hits he's going to take."
Madden was impressed with Wilson's attitude.
"Like he said, 'Don't feel sorry for me, it's something you have to do and I'm fine with it, and I appreciate the career I had.'" (6:45)
