Cupertino Teenager Advances To Semi-Finals Of National Spelling Bee

CUPERTINO (CBS SF) -- A South Bay teenager has made her way to the semi-finals of the Scripps National Spelling Bee in Washington, DC.

14-year old Neha Konakalla of Cupertino spelled 'recalcitrant' and 'tarpaulin' correctly to advance to the next round on Thursday morning.

The eighth grader won the KPIX-sponsored CBS Bay Area Local Spelling Bee back in March.

There are a total of 46 children still competing in the bee. Neha, along with another teen from the Los Angeles area, are the only two participants remaining in the bee from California.

Finals for the Scripps National Spelling Bee are scheduled to take place Thursday night.
