Crews Calm Big Basin Blaze In Santa Cruz County

SANTA CRUZ COUNTY (CBS SF) -- Cal Fire crews have contained a 3-acre brush fire that started Wednesday morning in Big Basin Redwoods State Park in Santa Cruz County, a Cal Fire battalion chief said.

The fire was reported at about 7:30 a.m. and crews stopped it from spreading about two hours later, Cal Fire Battalion Chief Brandon Leitzke said.

Crews will have to remain at the scene for a couple of days to extinguish smoldering spots on the ground, which is covered with heavy dry brush and wood, Leitzke said.

"It's going to be a really heavy mop-up," he said.

Cal Fire's Santa Clara County division was sent to help fight the blaze along with the agency's firefighters in Santa Cruz and San Mateo counties.

The cause of the fire has not yet been determined, fire officials said.
