Credit Card Transaction Fee Goes Into Effect At San Francisco Parking Meters
SAN FRANCISCO (CBS SF) – Drivers who use credit or debit cards to pay for parking at meters in San Francisco are being charged extra for that convenience, as a new transaction fee went into effect.
The San Francisco Municipal Transportation Agency began assessing a 27 cent fee for using plastic starting last Saturday.
SFMTA spokesperson Paul Rose told KPIX 5 last month that the federal grant covering transaction fees for the past few years is no more.
"If we're going to provide this option, we have to pay for it," Rose told KPIX 5's Mark Kelly in a story that aired on July 7th.
The transaction fee is expected to raise $47.7 million over the next nine years.
While it costs more to use credit and debit cards, fees to pay for parking via phone have dropped. The new fee is also 27 cents, down from 45 cents per phone transaction.
