Crash Triggers Traffic Nightmare On Highway 24

LAFAYETTE (CBS SF) -- An accident near the LaFayette BART station early Wednesday brought traffic to a near halt on the jam-packed freeway, transforming the morning commute into a nightmare.

The California Highway Patrol reported the crash between a truck and a red Ford Focus at 7:34 a.m. on westbound Highway 24 near the center Lafayette exit. All but one lane was shutdown by the crash, triggering an immediate backup.

Although there were no injuries in the accident, it took crews 22 minutes to reopen all the lanes. By the time of the reopening, traffic was backed up on Highway 680 feeding into 24 for miles to Pleasant Hill.

The CHP warned drivers to give themselves extra time to get into San Francisco Wednesday morning.
