Suspected DUI crash in Sonoma County leaves 1 dead, 2 injured, CHP says

CBS News Bay Area

The California Highway Patrol said a suspected DUI crash in Petaluma left one person dead and two injured on Sunday.

The crash happened on Lakeville Highway, near Old Lakeville Road, shortly before 6 a.m.

The CHP said a Ford Mustang was driving south on Lakeville Highway when the driver crossed double yellow lines while trying to attempt an illegal pass of a Toyota Highlander.

The Mustang crashed head-on with a Honda HR-V that was traveling north, the CHP said. This caused the Toyota to spin off the road after it was struck on the left side.

A passenger in the Honda died, officers said, while the driver was taken to a hospital with major injuries.

The Ford driver also suffered major injuries and was arrested for DUI of drugs and alcohol, the CHP said.

There were six people in the Toyota and none were injured.

The highway was closed for more than four hours.
