Covered California Cancelling More Than 10,000 Enrolled Over Failure To Prove Residency

LOS ANGELES (CBS SF) _ California's health insurance exchange is moving to cancel coverage for over 10,000 people who failed to prove they are U.S. citizens or legal residents.

Covered California began notifying about 100,000 families in September that they needed to verify they were living legally in the U.S.

People living in the country illegally are not eligible for coverage under the federal health law.

The agency said in a statement Monday it is notifying 10,474 people they have not provided adequate information.

Executive Director Peter Lee says those people can keep their coverage if they can document their legal status in the U.S.

Nearly 7,000 families remain under review.
