Copper Thieves Vandalize More Than A Dozen Street Lights In Morgan Hill

MORGAN HILL (CBS SF) -- Copper thieves have vandalized more than a dozen street lights in Morgan Hill, stripping away around 2,700 feet of copper wiring, police said Friday.

The theft and damage were discovered this week after a resident reported that several neighborhood streetlights had been vandalized, according to Sgt. Carson Thomas.

Police subsequently identified 15 streetlights and adjoining underground electrical boxes that had been stripped of copper.

The cost to repair the extensive damages has not been estimated yet, but copper has an approximate value of $1.10 to $2.65 per pound, Carson said.

The suspects are unknown at this time, and police are asking residents to report any suspicious activity or persons right away to assist them in catching any further offenses in the act.

Anyone with information on this incident can call Morgan Hill police at (408) 779-2101 or the anonymous tip line at (408) 947-STOP (7867).
