Contra Costa Water District Customers Using 35 Percent Less

CONTRA COSTA COUNTY (CBS SF) – One of the water districts that serves Contra Costa County announced Tuesday that its customers cut back on water use by more than a third last month compared to two years ago.

Contra Costa Water District officials said its customers, which include about 500,000 people in the central and eastern parts of the county, are "among the thriftiest water savers in the state."

The district reported that in December, 35 percent less water was used by these customers than in the same month in 2013.

The celebration came with a caveat though.

District officials stated that this December saw much more wet weather than in 2013, which may account for some of the savings.

Regardless, district officials said their customers are well ahead of state goals for cutting back on water use.

California has set a cumulative goal for the district of a 28 percent reduction. Since June, the district's customers have saved 37 percent.
