California Condor Makes Rare NorCal Appearance Near Pescadero

PESCADERO (CBS/AP) -- A California condor that was released into the wild last year has been spotted in a part of Northern California where the endangered species hasn't been seen in more than a century.

The San Francisco Chronicle reported that a motion-activated camera located on private property near the town of Pescadero caught a photo of the giant bird showing its numbered tag. The property's owner passed it on this week to the Ventana Wildlife Society, a conservation group.

The society's executive director, Kelly Sorenson, says it's been 110 years since a condor was observed so far north. The last confirmed sighting of a condor in San Mateo County was in 1904.

The 3-year-old female condor that showed up in the photo is nicknamed Lupine and typically makes her home in Pinnacles National Park, about 90 miles south.
