Coast Guard Video Shows Sailor Rescued From Sinking Boat Off Big Sur

MONTEREY (CBS SF) -- A sailor was rescued from the ocean Wednesday evening south of the Big Sur coast after his 42-foot boat started sinking, U.S. Coast Guard officials said.

The sailor, who was piloting the craft alone, called the Coast Guard at 3:30 p.m. to tell them his vessel Ment 2 Be was taking on water.

Coast Guard officials dispatched an MH-65 Dolphin rescue helicopter based in San Francisco and a 47-foot motor lifeboat crew from Monterey to rescue the sailor.

The helicopter arrived at 5 p.m. and lowered a rescue swimmer to the boat with an emergency pump. But the pump was damaged and could not keep up with the inflow of water, according to the Coast Guard.

The motor lifeboat crew took the sailor and swimmer on board at 6:30 p.m. and the sailor was taken to Monterey uninjured.

The sailor's boat could not be towed and appeared to have sunk sometime before Coast Guard officials sent a HC-27 Spartan aircrew to the area from Sacramento Thursday morning.

The forecast for weather offshore calls for small craft advisories into Independence Day with winds of up to 30 knots and swells of 10 to 15 feet, Coast Guard officials said.

Boaters and beachgoers should stay up to date on offshore and beach conditions to protect themselves from danger such as large, unexpected waves and rip currents.
