Coast Guard Rescues 6 After Boat Hits Rocks Near Point Bonita

SAN FRANCISCO (CBS SF) -- The Coast Guard rescued six distressed boaters near Point Bonita in the Golden Gate National Recreation Area Monday morning.

At 10:12 a.m., Coast Guard officials were notified of a 42-foot recreational fishing vessel that had navigated outside of the channel and struck submerged rocks, resulting in one person aboard suffering minor injuries, Coast Guard officials said.

The Coast Guard Cutter Aspen was nearby during the time of the incident and diverted its course to assist the boaters. Additionally, two response boat crews were launched from the Coast Guard Station Golden Gate, Coast Guard officials said.

Once the rescue crews were able to make contact with the boaters, emergency personnel administered basic first aid to the boater who suffered a minor head injury, according to Coast Guard officials.

The recreational fishing vessel was assessed for damage, put in tow and taken to be repaired, Coast Guard officials said.

"Situational awareness is imperative for all boat drivers on the bay, paying particular attention to channel markers and rocky waters can help prevent an unsafe situation," Petty Officer Robert Worobey said in a statement.
